From page one Lottie's Adventure is a joy to read. You immediately get to know Lottie as clever and mischievous but also as a caring and loving child. Lottie's wish for a summer adventure is fulfilled with a wonderfully exciting and believable story.

All the characters are interesting and enjoyable. Love them or hate them, none of them are boring and they all contribute to the story. You can almost smell Scotland's breath and feel his injuries. And the transformation of Lottie's grandmother from a stiff and pompous old woman to a loving grandmother is natural and understandable. It is clear throughout that Lottie affects everyone in the same way.

The way that Lottie and Charles fend for themselves with some assistance from caring adults is believable. It never requires a stretch to believe that they handled everything they did.

This is not only a neat adventure story for children but it is full of valuable lessons to help children take care of themselves. So, beyond the obvious entertainmen value, children come away with a positive view of their own capabilities.

The ending is also excellent and it culminated with a positive view of family life with both a full family and a single parent family. There was nothing mission from the life of either Lottie or Charles and that was another good lesson.
